Hello Desert Viewers.

Logic wrote a story under "Past Desert Experiences" here Salton Sea Authority and it was based on our family trips to the Salton Sea.

The great lake of the Sonoran Desert that today faces real challenges because god did not intend it to be there as it is today god wants to take the lake back to the dry lake bed it was prior to the levee accident from the Colorado River that flooded the great desert basin in 1901 during a water diversion to irrigate the agriculture potential of the Coachella Valley and Imperial County our Riverside County neighboring county.

Welcome to the Salton Sea Today

We are off to revisit the Salton Sea and share what you can see and do on an exploration adventure through the east end of our great Coachella Valley.

Salton Sea Statistics

The lake is located 227 feet below sea level with a maximum depth of 51 feet the dimensions of the lake it measures 35 miles in length and 15 miles in width.

Getting around the Salton Sea

The area has to roadways one that will take you through the left east side of the lake and one that will take you through the west side of the lake.

The east side is Highway 111 where the location of the Salton Sea State Recreation Area and is located 30 miles south out of Indio on highway 111 and you can launch a boat from the park, camp, fish hike and enjoy very nice evenings in a peaceful setting right on the Salton Sea.

The west side is State Highway 86 that comes from the Interstate 10 Freeway or you can enter it from Highway 111 the main highway that runs through Palm Springs to Indio and each city in between. The State Highway 86 route is our favorite because the west side of the lake is where all of the historic action took place during the Salton Sea hey days. Turn off in any small lake side town or stop into Desert Shores where Logic used to visit in the 60's and early 70's.

One might wonder what is going to happen to the Salton Sea the largest lake in California and a man made accident that needs to not be saved but righted.

Logic and Catnip when we actually relocate to Thermal in 2011/2012 just north up the road from the Salton Sea will be getting casually involved in the Salton Sea and what should be done.

Logic has actually been to a few Salton Sea Authority meetings.

If this gets anymore political then it currently is then no one is going to step up and help correct the wrong done by humans.

In the meantime it is encouraged that visitors coming into the Coachella Valley make the 40 to 60 minute drive out to see this wonderful body of water in the middle of the Sonoran Desert it is amazing as Huell Howser Television personality for California PBS Television would say "oh boy this is going to be exciting".

The Salton Sea has a long family history with me. As a child my whole family used to vacation on the sea and spend weekends water skiing, fishing and what not. I remember having to wear shoes in the water or my feet would get cut up by the Coral in the water. Now as an older adult the sea holds a different interest to me. That is the wildlife and conservation. I visit frequently the Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge on the southern end of the sea. I am totally amazed by the amount of migratory waterfowl and other birds that visit the sea. I visited last week and am going to go again tomorrow. I have posted a few photos on my web site yesterday from the SSNWR and I will post more later this week. It is worth your time to go and visit this wonderland especially this time of year. One thing nice about it is there is so much to see without getting out of your car should you choose not to. Bring food and water though as stops are few and far in between.

Hi Jim,

Like you we went to the Salton Sea on the weekends... I remember boating, swiming, & water skiing back in the early 1970's As for the coral, I didn't wear my shoes once, & tore my feet up pretty good w00t I took my wife Joanne down to the sea for the 1st time for her last year 2007. She liked it. That is where we took our photo's I posted for LOGIC. Brings back some very fun memories.

WOW WEE.

With the countdown to summer fast approaching and the cost of things rising, Logic thought that a visitor arriving into the Coachella Valley might stay really cool with the good old wallet not needed by taking a trip, a short drive along the Coachella Valley Highway 111 to the great Salton Sea.

The Salton Sea is a salt water man made accident from many years ago in the farthest eastern end of our vast valley and because this lake is a giant body of water nearing 15 miles wide and 30 miles long, it is easy to find your very own piece of quit.

Being near water will keep you cool, having a lot of space to explore in will keep the family entertained for hours and if you pack a picnic you can enjoy a sea side lunch outing all for the cost of a few gallons of gasoline.

Ok the secret is out about a special and movie famous place on the eastern side of the Salton Sea along Highway 111 or State Route 111 where in a little town named Bombay Beach yes a beach in the desert, there is the perfect movie location used in a lot of movies.

This is Huell Howser

Featured on Huell Howser's California's Parks for the California's Gold television program seen state wide on various stations like KCET for the valley these California Public Stations really bring a large amount of California locations to light for us all to see and go to and experiance.
